About the NSW/QLD and VIC foster care program.

From time to time, while our assistance dogs are in training or preparing for placement with their new forever owners, temporary foster caring in a loving home is required. Our Foster Carer program involves short term care for a fully house trained 12-24 month old assistance dog. Foster care periods can vary between 1-2 days up to 2 months and could be over holiday periods. This will depend on your availability, the dog’s needs, and the circumstances where foster care is required.

During the time our dogs are placed into foster care with you, we will arrange all transport for delivery and collection. If, however you are able to assist, this would be most helpful, but is not a requirement.

By taking part in this program, you and your family become active members of our community in supporting our First Responders and Veterans living with PTSD, and their families.

What we ask of our fosters

Along with the support of our wonderful team, the tasks required to take part in the program are as follows:

  • Work collaboratively with LifeUnleashed dog trainers and instructors
  • Provide a secure household (an environment where food, chemicals, poisons medications can be out of reach and where the property is fenced/lockable)
  • Feed the dog (provided food by LifeUnleashed only) and manage a healthy dog weight
  • Implement crate training
  • Groom the dog regularly
  • Reinforce good dog manners, house and toilet training

Please note all equipment will be provided and vet bills, food and supplements are also covered by LifeUnleashed.
