About the ACT program.

While our Service Dogs are in training in Canberra, and waiting to be paired with their forever owner, they need to be cared for in a loving environment. Our ACT  Foster Carer program involves short term care of a fully house trained 12-24 month old dog. Foster caring time can vary from one week to several months, depending on the dog’s needs.

While our dogs are in fostering, they will be undertaking advanced training from Monday to Friday at our Phillip, Canberra facility. For your convenience, our team will pick up our dog in the morning and drop them back to you after work. However if you are able to assist with any transport we would be most grateful.

By taking part in this program, you and your family are active members of our community supporting our First Responders and Veterans living with PTSD, and their families.

What we ask of our fosters

Along with the support of our wonderful team, the tasks required to take part in the program are as follows:

  • Work collaboratively with LifeUnleashed dog trainers and instructors
  • Provide a secure household (an environment where food, chemicals, poisons medications can be out of reach and where the property is fenced/lockable)
  • Feed the dog (provided food by LifeUnleashed only) and manage a healthy dog weight
  • Implement crate training
  • Groom the dog regularly
  • Reinforce good dog manners, house and toilet training

Please note all equipment will be provided and vet bills, food and supplements are also covered by LifeUnleashed.
